Shopping and Hexie Insanity

Shopping 081115We were camping over the weekend down near Millersburg so mom and I decided to take a trip over to Miller’s Dry Goods on Friday. I found a few things that I could use 🙂 The panel is for the back of Alex’s bed quilt (that I need to get working on!) and so is the Thomas yardage. The white on white (hexagons!) and the Moda Marbles is for the hexie insanity quilt. My mom bought the rolled up fabric for Cassie, it’s an ABC book I need to put together for her. I also got some Aurifil thread in white for hexie insanity, but it’s already in the workbox. It was a nice shop but it’s almost 2 hours from our house to get there, it was only a half hour from the campground we were at. They have TONS of Moda Marbles colors, I simply loved the one I bought called Sea Glass. I’m debating buying more of it to use for the solid border in hexie insanity, I only need about 3 yards of fabric for that border alone, but I’ll decide that later, at least I know where I can get some more colors!!

hexi insanity 081115So I already cut up that half yard of Moda Marbles on the Studio so i can start using it. Didn’t take but 15 minutes to cut into 760 2″ squares and a small amount of waste. Now I can baste and make some flowers and diamonds with it! Planning on cutting up that new white as well, get it mixed in with all the other whites I have prepped. I finished adding the white path on another diamond and have a second almost done – both worked on during the camping trip.

I have a few quilts that need backs and quilting, I need to get the commission quilt finished before the end of the month and that is at the top of the list. Looks like this week is going to be busier than I thought so I don’t know if I’ll get to work on it or not. Certainly going to try!

Good Night Irene Update

Good Night Irene 071015I have FINALLY gotten all the center of the quilt put together. When I originally signed up for the SAL and designed it in EQ I was going to put a border of just one fabric on it. I decided I didn’t have anything I liked or wanted to use for the border and I’ve now designed a border with 9 patches to go next. After I finish working on my next commission quilt I’ll get back to this one. I’d like to get it finished and put in the “to quilt” pile.

I’ve decided to work on Bonnie Hunter’s leader/ender project this year since it’s tumbler blocks. I have SO many 2.5″ squares that have been cut over the years that I needed to do something with them. Cutting them just a little into tumblers is so easy and I can easily make some kind of quilt out of them. I just ordered a template from Missouri Star Quilting Company and after a discussion in one of my Facebook groups, I found out that Sizzix makes a die for cutting 2.5″ tumblers (4 at a time) and it will work on my Studio, so I happened to find that die on MSQC as well and ordered it. I need an adapter to use it in the Studio, so until I find out the thickness and either buy one or have daddy make me one I can use the template.

Mondo Bags - Sage SolanaWe finally got together with our friends so we could give the girls their birthday presents. I’ve had them done and sitting here wrapped for over a month! I made them Mondo bags in their school colors and I’m happy to say they loved them!

It’s getting late and I want to get a few more things done before bed, hoping to be working on projects more and being able to post updates!

Design Wall Monday – January 26, 2015

Good Night Irene 012515First up is my design wall/floor. I finished all the 16 patch blocks for Good Night Irene and cut the 44 4.5″ blocks I need to finish the pieced border. I just need to sit and sew the triangles on one corner of 40 of the newly cut blocks and then I can start putting it all together. Glad to see this finally coming together, it was a sew along from last year that just didn’t happen.
Alex's First Project

So Saturday when I was sewing and Alex had gotten up from “quiet time” he said he wanted to sew like me. Made my heart melt that he was interested in something I was doing! I told him we could make a blanket for his Glomer (glow-worm) that he takes EVERYWHERE! So yesterday he picked out 6 4.5″ squares and we sewed them together. I just put the backing on the top and sewed around it, flipped it inside out and then sewed around it to close the hole up. He helped with almost all of it, started to get bored by the time we got to sewing the last go around. But he’s proud of it and has been carrying it around with Glomer since we finished it.

Slow Stitching Sunday 012515So I meant to actually post this yesterday, and link to Kathy’s Slow Stitching Sunday post, but never got around to actually opening my laptop and doing a post. Just went to the page and it’s still open for posts! Yesterday was spent working on Hexie Insanity while we watched the Cavs beat Oklahoma City Thunder. I really am loving the peace that comes over me when I work on hexies. There’s no rush, no deadline, just time to work and relax. Not a lot of time for relaxing with 2 kids under 5, but we make do! Hopefully I’ll have some more progress to show with this quilt soon. Today I cut some white 2.5″ squares down to 2″ and some scrap white from the Good Night Irene project so I could start prepping some white hexies. I also signed up for white on white fat quarters in our guild exchange so I will have some nice variety coming all going to this project.

Hexie Insanity Update

Hexie Insanity 011515I’m happy to add another 8 diamonds and 1 flower to my hexie insanity quilt. The count is now 32 of 158 diamonds completed and 18 of 64 flowers completed for a total of 4% done! LOL Last week I cut up one of the jelly rolls that I got for Mother’s Day last year, today I finished cutting up the other one. Between the 2 jelly rolls I have 1600 squares ready to be turned into hexies. I still have 3 charm packs and 4 quarter yard cuts that need to be cut up too, but I’ll do those once I get some of these other squares used up. I also bought a yard of white for the paths between the diamonds and I also decided to cut some of my white 2.5″ square smaller so there’s a variety in the white. I won’t cut any of that for a while though I want to get all the diamonds and flowers finished first. I keep trading off between this project and my knitting at night, depending on how tired I am. It’s a lot easier to fix hexies than the knitting – I hate taking stitches out of the knitting!! Hopefully be back tomorrow with a knitting update!

A New Start

2014-08-06 17.15.46hexi insanityI know I have too many things going right now, but I miss doing my hexies! In the last 2 weeks I’ve been working hard on my knitting and I’ve gotten the first repeat completed.  I will continue to work on it, but I need something else to work on as well. Otherwise my hands/arms are going to get too tired and sore of doing the same thing over and over again. So yesterday I cut out 2″ x 2″ squares from 2 charms packs and I now have about 336 squares ready for use. Only took me about 15 minutes to cut them out with my studio since I bought the 2″ square die awhile ago. I already have 1 diamond done and I’m working on the first flower today. I’m using Moda Marbles fabrics, I love how they look and think the whole quilt will look awesome with all the marble/tone on tone fabrics! I have another quilt that is in process using Moda Marbles, I need to finish the borders so I can cut that fabric up for this project.

Tonight is my EQ class, I did my lessons yesterday and printed them out, so I’ve been able to relax this afternoon and work on hexies! Hopefully I’ll be back soon with some finishes, I have to finish Cassie’s wall quilt for the quilt show and I’m hoping I can get the Hexie Diamonds one done for the show, but time is running out and I need to get the border on it and get it quilted. Hopefully Cassie will nap nicely tomorrow morning while Alex is at school and I can get her quilt bordered, layered and maybe even start quilting it.

It’s Been Awhile….

May 13I have been so busy the last few months that I really haven’t done much sewing.  Why have I been busy?  Because my precious little girl Cassie was born!!!! She will be 2 months old on Wednesday and I can’t believe how fast the time has gone! We cannot believe she’s here, it’s amazing how different she is from Alex in size and attitude. Alex loves his little sister, almost too much, since he always wants to kiss her when she’s sleeping and that wakes her up!

I managed to get a few things done in my office over the weekend, finally made a cover for Alex’s dresser and now it’s protected from scratches. I forgot to take a picture of it, but it’s nothing special just 2 different fabrics (construction equipment and Chuggington trains) with some batting. I didn’t even quilt it, just stitched a 1/4 inch around the edges.

2014-05-14 10.58.35I finally managed to finish the last diamond for the penultimate row of my hexagon diamonds quilt.  At the same time I’ve been working on the black pieces I need for fill in at the top and right now I’m working on putting one of those in place. Everything is slow work since Cassie wants to be fed every few hours! 🙂 I really would like to finish this so I can put it in our guild quilt show this year. Plus it’s for our bed in the trailer!

hexi insanity2014-05-14 10.58.59I joined another group on Facebook for those that are making what is called the Insanity Quilt by Rhonda Pearce. I really don’t need another hexagon quilt to make, but I love the design!!!  I bought 3/4″ and 1/2″ hexagon papers from paperpieces.com awhile ago so I could decide which size I liked better and I also bought the Studio dies that I needed to cut my fabric into the correct sizes.  I got the quilt designed in EQ7 and it’s going to be almost 100″ x 100″!! I’m planning on using the 3/4″ hexis, the 1/2″ are just too small for me.  So when hubby asked what I’d like for Mother’s Day, I found some Moda Marbles jelly rolls on Amazon and gave him that option.  Since it’s a lot of diamonds and flowers, I can start working on them as soon as I get hexie diamonds finished. It’s really hard to NOT cut into the fabric and start working on it!!  I have some Moda Marbles here that I’m using on another quilt that I will also use once I finish the other quilt (yeah I know something else to finish!). I still need to decide on the background color, but I’ll probably use a solid Kona, white or cream. I won’t need it for awhile since I’ll just work on the flowers and diamonds for awhile first.

Well, Cassie is up again, time to get her dressed and fed so we can go out for a walk – I have more baby weight to lose!!!!  And since I just realized it’s Monday, I’m linking up to Patchwork Times!

Off the Needles!

DSC_7627I finished it!!!! I actually finished on Monday (3/3), but just got around to taking pictures today.  I kept forgetting to take the good camera upstairs with me and I only go up twice a day anymore.  It took me 2 months (almost exactly) of work and I did leave 2 of the repeats out because I didn’t think it needed to be any longer and because she’ll be here soon!  Of course I finished it before my c-section was scheduled, but we found out yesterday that it is planned for 3/21, that’s only 2 weeks from tomorrow!!!! I can’t wait to wrap her in this blanket totally made with mommies love!  Now I can work on hexies until I get more yarn so I can start a blanket for Kimmie’s friend who is due in July.  Gotta keep practicing!DSC_7629

Before Alex was born I made a signature quilt and had everyone at the shower sign it.  Well we aren’t having a shower for little girl so I couldn’t do the same thing.  However I have decided that I will make signature blocks and anyone that comes to visit at the hospital or here at home needs to sign them.  Then eventually I’ll put it all together into a quilt and it can hang in her room like Alex’s does.  I’ve already designed the quilt and I’ve pulled some pink fat quarters out of the stash.  Need to check one more place to see if there are any more pinks, might get a few more at the new Joann’s that’s opening tomorrow.  Alex will be staying at my parents Saturday night, so hopefully Sunday I can cut everything out on the Studio and start sewing.  Alex likes to help me push the pedal on the sewing machine, so maybe he can help me next week too!

Off to rest my back, teaching EQ tonight and my back hurts after sitting at the computer too long!

Design Wall Monday – December 23

Scrappy 9 Patch

I did it!  I finally got the 2 borders on scrappy 9-patch! Glad to have another quilt off my in process list, especially since Good Night Irene SAL starts in just over a week!  Of course I sat the other day and cut out pieces from a charm pack to make a thousand pyramid quilt.  I had bought this 100 piece charm pack during a guild meeting when a vendor had come for our program.  It’s a Benartex sampler of Fossil Fern (link is NOT where I bought it just the first link I found, but that is a GOOD price!) – which I LOVE!  I had been planning to make a thousand pyramid quilt for awhile, so I bought the equilateral triangle to use on my studio, but it is a Go die. I think I can make this big enough to use as a lap quilt, we’ll see how long it takes to put this together. We are heading back to the MIL’s tonight, so I can’t work the rest of the day on this, BUT I can get some done before we have to get ready to leave.  Plus I have most of the day tomorrow, the only thing I need to do for Christmas is make the ribbon jello!

EQ exampleI was just designing my thousand pyramid quilt in EQ in order to decide how many rows to make and how many pieces in each row and I have to say that I don’t like how they determine the counts for each row.  For example, looking at the triangles, it counts them by one of the patches, not the top and bottom of the row. This gives you a skewed count of the number of patches needed to complete the row. So using the example to the right, it’s set for 2 horizontal and 2 vertical – yet really uses 3 triangles per row (not including those half patches at the end of rows). I’d rather it count and tell me exactly how many full patches I need to complete the row, instead of needing to count them up and make sure I have the number of pieces I need.  *sigh* Maybe some day they’ll fix the way these work.

Better get working before Alex gets up from his nap and we need to head out!

Applique update

2013-11-29 15.33.19I haven’t done much work at the machine this week, with some semi-sleepless nights and running errands getting ready for the holiday (both requiring afternoon naps) I just didn’t have time. I have managed to get 11 of the 12 flowers appliqued down to the background blocks. I love how they all look!  Now to start working on attaching the scrap blocks around the flowers!  I have all of the 3 block pieces ready to go, hoping to get them all attached today and then hopefully start working on the 5 block pieces.

Accuquilt has had some nice sales the last few days for Black Friday and yesterday was the sale I was waiting for! I found the 4.5″ square multi die on sale so that I could use rewards points to buy it and only pay $8 for shipping!  Now once I get the fabric I can start getting things ready for the Good Night Irene SAL that starts the first of the year.  Not that I should be working on that one yet, I need to finish the other 3 quilts that are in progress!  Or at least finish the guild challenge top and the scrappy 9 patch – both just need 2 borders added to them!

Lots to get done today, worked on some Xmas presents (not sewing related!) and still have a few more that need to be worked on, but tonight we are meeting my cousin and her kids to go to the Holiday walk in the Metroparks by us.  We took Alex last year and he had a ball!

Guild Block Exchange & New Project

2013-11-21 16.34.47

Well I am ALMOST done with my guild block exchange quilt!!  I just need to do the borders.  I had to do a little fixing on some of the blocks, including some of my own!  I just added strips of my background fabric and then squared them up to 12.5″.  Made it quite easy to add all the sashing and finish putting the rows together.  I really like how it’s turned out, and I can’t wait to see what everyone else has done.

Scrappy with applieque hexiesI know, I need another project like I need a hole in my head! I saw a few rows of a quilt on Facebook and really liked the idea of the scrappy 25-patch blocks mixing with a scrappy block that has an applique on it.  I’ve already pulled all the pieces I need for the hexie flowers and started pinning them to my 1″ papers.  I just happen to have the 6.5″ square die for my Studio so I can cut the white squares I need to applique them to.  By the time this is done I’ll have used up 517 2.5″ squares!!!  Quilt will end up being 58″ x 58″ with the border.

Good night irene quiltI mentioned the other day that I was joining another SAL over at Terry’s Treasures.  I designed the quilt in EQ so I could play with sizes and decide how big I wanted to make it.  With a border this quilt will be around 58″ x 58″. This will be entirely made of scrap pieces as well, using 2.5″ squares (or triangles) and 4.5″ squares.  I need to see what whites I have to use, I may have to make a trip to Joann’s to get a white of some sort to use.  I just figured it out and this quilt (in the size I’ve chosen) will use 192 2.5″ squares in the 16-patches, 96 4.5″ squares, 144 2.5″ squares (or triangles) in the X blocks. That will use 336 2.5″ squares in the quilt!  Between the 2 quilts I’ll use up a lot of scraps!!!!

I still need to cut 40 black 6.5″ squares for the scrappy 9-patch quilt.  I will most likely cut the white and black squares at the same time since I’ll have the Studio out from under the sewing table.  I just got the larger tray and the large Go adapter for the Studio today, so I’ll be able to use my 2.5″ strip die now.  Definitely having fun working on scrap quilts, even though I have LOTS of other quilts I need to finish!  I’ve also been slowly working on pieces for my hexagon diamond quilt, still haven’t put the row together even though I finished the diamonds, I will need to work on that soon, but I did start working on the black hexies I need for fill in on the top and bottom. Although now I’ll be working on the hexies for the applique instead!

Alex is up from his nap, so I better get him up and it’s almost time to start working on dinner anyway.  Laters!
